Ezra: On the Map

I’m in London today with my good friend and arts collaborator Rose Davies to promote a publication that we’ve produced together. Swansea: On the Map was commissioned from us by London publishers SampsonLow and tonight sees the private view of an exhibition of our map alongside those by associated artists from across the UK.

On The Map exhibition features 12 new maps from a group of 14 exciting contemporary artists. Each map was designed to be printed as an A3 fold out sheet with 4 supporting pages on it’s reverse side. The brief was to create a map through an artists eyes to help others see different towns and cities in a different light. Maps have been created from as far afield as Cornwall, Wales, and London. The On The Map exhibition is showing at The Sunbury Embroidery Gallery in Sunbury-on-Thames, London until 10th May. More details on how to get there can be found here.

I’ve shown work with many of my co-exhibitors before and it is going to be great to meet up with some old friends as well as create some new ones. It’s not often that I get to travel to London so seems a shame not to exploit these geographical adventures. I’m trying to squeeze in some time today to meet my agent and also fit in some much needed retail therapy here in the London sunshine.

Our map was created as a hand made collage so the look of our publication is very different to that of other contributors. We photographed everything to communicate that original physicality and to give the owner of the map a sense of tactility with their product. Here in Wales we’re very hands on with our art and the way artists work together is always innovative and progressive in nature. We wanted our map to reflect the unique ways that we work together as well as putting our town in the public eye.
