Please help!

logoIt’s not often I divert and use this space to talk about other things. Yes, I mention my feelings and musings about life the universe and everything but they’re rarely personal. This is mostly because I’ve created this space for professional thoughts and philosophical generalities. Nevertheless there are exceptions, and today demands action.

A friend of mine has been given a poor diagnosis. From out of nowhere his life is on the line and he’s found himself in a position where each day is a fight. At 32, everything is suddenly in the balance and each 24 hour period is a blessing. Within days after receiving the diagnosis he was given a week to live. So he decided to do just that… Live.

I’m not surprised that a fortnight later he’s still here and still fighting. Even as a kid he was overwhelmingly stubborn and determined to live every day on his own terms. With this might come a certain selfishness but this has never been the case. Instead he’s always used his personality, humour, and brain to inspire and support others. He’s one of the most generous and selfless people I know and it is a real honour to be counted amongst his friends.

Yes he’s struggling. Of course he is. He’s pouring his energy into fighting for his life but he’s also putting a little aside to support those who are supporting him. How he has this energy I do not know. He should be resting, relaxing, and looking after himself instead of giving anyone else support but like I say, he’s stubborn. So we’re respecting this in the only way we know how and we’re rising to the challenge.

Macmillan Cancer Support are integral to patient services here in the UK. I know from personal experience how vital they are to helping people fight cancer. They shouldn’t be a charity. We shouldn’t have to raise money for them. They should be a properly funded government organisation because they are that good at the care and support they give. But it is what it is and we need to support Macmillan so that they can continue to have the resources they need and right now we need Macmillan to support our friend.

I don’t usually do charity pleas here. I think I’ve only done it once before in the 5 years I’ve been writing this blog. I don’t get personal unless I have to and now I’m making that personal plea. Please, if you have a soul and a spare 50p in your pocket, please click here and give something, anything. Help us to help Macmillan. Go Team Hamster! We’re with you all the way!
