Here’s Marionette, the latest in my Automata series. It’s been a long while coming due to other work. It’s also a long learning process as I work out how to work through the technicalities of the machine.

It’s all very well looking at the still version of this automaton but when the handle is turned it needs to work in completely the right way. All it takes is a millimetre sanded incorrectly and the cogs will stick and the mechanism won’t work according to plan. Similarly there is a lot of time needed for gluing and setting pieces. I reckon only a third of the making time is actually in the making, the rest is all waiting for glue to dry and thinking through the concepts of the machinery.

This artwork will debut at The Creative Bubble in Swansea on Saturday. More about that, and this, tomorrow.
