New Forms

I still don’t know what I’m doing or where I’m headed. Sometimes this is the best bit about being an artist. The focus and drive in a particular direction whilst blindfold can be exhilarating. It can also be a bit daunting when you’re not sure about the philosophy or reasoning behind what you’re doing.

I always tell my photography students to run on instinct. If it fees right, then it is right. It it looks good and you think you’re doing your best then any story you wish to tell with your imagery, or any concept you want to communicate, will follow later. Right now I’m following my instincts and not worrying about where this is heading.

This piece was made from the drawings I did yesterday. I wanted to make a rough waistcoat from the paper which appeared to burst at the chest. The rough edges of everything are deliberate. The form is based on the same torso as the other day. I think this is a theme I will be working on but I’m not sure whether it will evolve to use other things other than a torso. It’s deliberately fragile and vulnerable and is designed to be stood on a plinth rather than be wall mounted. I think I need to do a bit of research in this area before I continue. I need to find out what I’m doing now.

At least I have a title for this new series: New Forms
